Coexistence with the Environment
Approach and Policy
Mankind has taken significant strides forward thanks to technological progress. Its immense contribution includes dramatically lower mortality rates and higher standards of living. On the other hand, the negative aspects that have accompanied this progress cannot be ignored. It has increased pollutants and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, causing environmental problems. Based on this reality, the Mitsubishi Chemical Group is proactively working to reduce its GHG emissions, conserve resources and energy, prevent contamination of the air, water and soil, limit waste generation, encourage reuse and recycling, engage in activities and develop technologies that help conserve the natural environment, and develop and produce environmentally friendly products, in order to assess its impacts on the environment and continuously reduce environmental impacts at every level of its business activities.
Structure
Each operating company of the Group utilizes their environmental management systems—many ISO 14000 certified—and other means to reduce their environmental impacts.
Additionally, through the activities of the Sustainability Committee, we are working to develop products that are considerate of the environment and take steps to prevent global warming.
Core Measures
Reducing Emissions of Substances that Impact the Environment
The Group has endeavored to conduct corporate activities in consideration of the environment while contributing to technological development through its businesses.
We have identified substances that impact the environment in connection with its business activities. These are GHG, which contribute to global warming; nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx); particulates; volatile organic compounds (VOCs); and chemical substances in discharged water. The Group has been conducting activities to reduce these emissions based on emissions-reduction targets.
Measures to Reduce GHG Emissions
Reducing COD
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) has set Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) reduction targets and is working systematically to reduce its environmental impacts on bodies of water. This initiatives applies only to Japan-based business offices.
Resource Conservation Measures
The Group stands committed to contributing to resolving issues related to the depletion of energy and metal resources by advocating the shift to a circular economy that makes effective use of finite resources.
Reducing Waste
To contribute to the formation of a recycling society, the Mitsubishi Chemical Group aims to reduce landfill waste and achieve zero emission by recycling and reducing waste generation. We promote recycling and reducing waste generation. Because each business emits different types of waste, we are advancing initiatives based on separate targets and achievement plans for each operating company.
Participation in Development of International Standards and Public Policy
As a member of the Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA), MCC is involved in investigating and researching safety and environmental issues and developing related countermeasures. Through its activities with JCIA, the Company participates in the management of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA). In this capacity, we work to solve issues common to chemical companies worldwide, such as chemicals management and global warming countermeasures.
