Global Impact Coalition Launches Automotive Plastics Circularity Pilot Project in Europe with Seven Leading Companies from Chemical and Recycling Industries
March 4, 2025
The Mitsubishi Chemical Group, (the MCG Group) is pleased to announce that the Global Impact Coalition (GIC), a platform of global chemical manufacturers that aims to realize a low-carbon future, of which the MGC Group is the only Japanese member, launched a pilot in February 2025 to establish a supply chain for recycling plastics from End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs). The project is a joint effort by seven companies from the chemical and recycling industries: the MCG Group, BASF, Covestro, LyondellBasell, SABIC, SUEZ, Syensqo. This marks the first time global companies have collaborated to build a supply chain for recycling plastics from ELVs in Europe.
In this pilot, companies and organizations responsible for each stage of the recycling process will collaborate to remove plastics from 100 ELVs and categorize them into 10 polymer types. Then, the participating chemical manufacturers will assess the feasibility of recycling the polymers in accordance with their specific properties. The initiative will address the critical challenge arising from the EU’s ELV Directive, which promotes the use of recycled plastics from ELVs. Based on the findings of the pilot, the aim is to realize large-scale closed-loop recycling systems for various automotive plastics.
The MCG Group will continue to provide innovative solutions for sustainable resource management and to support the evolution of mobility through environmentally responsible materials.
