“DURABIO”, a bio-engineering plastic partly made from plant-derived isosorbide, is adopted for ALBION’s cosmetic containers -Expressing the beauty of natural seashells through a combination of different resins-

September 1, 2026

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Manabu Chikumoto) is pleased to announce that the plant-derived bio-engineering plastic DURABIO™ has been adopted for use in the compact cases for “Excia Eye Color Volonte,” part of the “ALBION Excia Makeup Collection” to be offered for a limited time from November 1, 2026 by ALBION Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Shoichi Kobayashi). By combining DURABIO™ with other transparent resins and injection molding them, a beautiful texture reminiscent of natural seashells is achieved.

A compact case for "Excia Eye Color Volonte" featuring DURABIO™

DURABIO™, a bio-engineering plastic made primarily from plant-derived isosorbide, offers high transparency and excellent optical properties. In addition to its plant-derived raw material content, DURABIO™ provides excellent weather resistance and durability.

These compact cases are designed to shift in appearance depending on the viewing angle and lighting, creating a sense of depth through their texture. Combining DURABIO™ with other transparent resins (such as PET) allows the differences in their optical properties to create pearlescent designs, while flow patterns can be manipulated during injection molding to produce designs that resemble seashells. Although mixing different resins tends to make the resultant material less robust and more prone to cracking, DURABIO™’s excellent durability enhances both design and strength, which is why it was selected in this instance.

Mitsubishi Chemical will continue seeking out wider uses for DURABIO™ to provide its customers with still more high-value-added solutions.
