DURABIO, the World’s First Bio-based Engineering Plastic, Adopted by Honda for its Motorcycle Windshields
May 17, 2024
Mitsubishi Chemical Group Corporation (“the Group”) announces that its bio-based engineering plastic DURABIO™ has been adopted by Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (“Honda”) for the windshield of its CRF1100L Africa Twin series. These large adventure model motorcycles featuring the new windshield were released on March 21, 2024. This is the first time in the world* that bio-based engineering plastic has ever been employed in motorcycle windshields.
DURABIO™ is a bioengineering plastic made from isosorbide, a renewable plant-derived raw material. It helps reduce the consumption of petroleum, a finite nonrenewable resource, and also contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions because the plants that are used as raw materials absorb CO2 during their growth. DURABIO™ provides excellent weather resistance, scratch resistance, and transparency, and is being used in a wide range of fields, including automotive interior and exterior parts, optical and electronic device components, and everyday sundries. DURABIO™ has been adopted by Honda for its outstanding performance that meets the required functions of windshields such as protection against the wind.
As a specialty materials group dedicated to offering innovative solutions, the MCG Group is committed to delivering high-value-added products like DURABIO™ to drive the realization of a sustainable society.
* Researched by Honda (as of October 2023)
